Tracom Services Limited, the leading payments provider in Africa has partnered with Europe’s automated fare platform, O-CITY to develop and roll out a cashless fare collection platform.
The platform is known as Lipafare, which means to pay bus fare in Swahili, is aimed at the public transport industry in Kenya and Africa at large. Public Transport is the main mode of transport on the continent and is used by over 80% of all comminutors. The industry is very cash-intensive.
Lipafare will address the inherent challenges experienced by the industry by automating fare collections. The system is USSD based and can work with all types of Mobile phones. Each vehicle is issued a code that acts as an account number within the system.
Lipafare is implemented by Nikodigi, a subsidiary of Tracom Services Limited, whose core business is Sacco management and payment solutions. Nikodigi has vast experience in the sector and understands the needs and challenges of the commuter, matatu crew, and vehicle owner.
